National Stripes Day

I hear it’s national stripes day. My favorite of all the made up holidays, naturally. We went to Charleston earlier this month and imagine my glee when I went outside and saw this striped set up. Watch me camouflage.

I’m such a fan of mixing old with new, resale with just freshly bought and this outfit allowed me to do the best version of that. The dress is a little Kate Spade number that Marcus snapped up for me as a “heard you were having a sucky” week present. The little whale was a find from Plato’s closet, of all places that I heavily weighed not getting. For some odd reason, I thought maybe I had too many critter clothing items and purses. Like that could ever happen.

One of my favorite parts of this outfit is the little bracelet. It’s from a local shop owner in Charleston called The Tiny Tassel run by shop owner, Mimi who I’ve talked about before on the blog. Marcus and I went to hang out with her and a bunch of other ladies that weekend and I could not resist purchasing a few goodies while I was in the shop. You should check out her spring line; it’s the most adorable one yet. (Was not paid to say that. In fact I paid for the bracelet. It allows me to stay refreshingly honest and object lol).

A6D44E75-28FD-4DDF-B7D9-881009FAF5ABI think I may have talked about these shoes on the blog before but I almost always get questions about them. They’re a J. Crew hack from some years ago where I swapped out whatever tie they came with for a louder, more exuberant ribbon that I picked up for $2 at a craft store. #makeitwork

And last but not least my trusty, sometimes dusty, Ray Ban clubmasters. Marcus bought these as a gift for me the summer when we first started dating and he said “these are classics and you’lll wear them for years to come”. A decade later and they are still going strong.

Grail items

I’ve been doing less shopping than I use to. Some because I’m running out of closet room and some because I seem to hate everything. Instead, I’ve been tracking down grail items -the ones that got away- and little unique pieces that would fit right at home in my closet from resell sites like Poshmark and eBay.

My husband has been in love with this dress from the very second they released it in. But I’m morally opposed to spending that much money on a possible one time wear and I passed on it until it popped up on eBay in my size. When he loves something, I at least try to track it down.

4F702E91-7038-4B81-A9AA-6347FAA92403This purse and coat were no brainers for me. The purse was a grail item because isn’t it just deliciously on brand for me? It’s just a little bit of fun add to this outfit. The coat which is going to be the perfect addition to my wardrobe into spring was actually a $5 local thrift shop. It’s the perfect transitional piece as we get just a touch of spring weather and I love it paired with other green prints.

A Hint of Pink, I Think.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” – Alfred Wainwright

I’ve lived my life by this quote for so long. Bad weather is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate personal style. With the creation of colorful wellies. There is never a time where I dress for rain or snow where I don’t get the best compliments. Because even in this weather my own style is apparent.

F318ED4F-3111-47FB-9BFB-1A8FF5EB01EF

Today it rained and I could. not. wait. to leave the house because finally, finally I could use this umbrella I got for Christmas (thank you sister in law who listens when I speak), these rain boots (thank you husband who also listens) and this Stutterheim x Madewell jacket that I scored for the low, low price of $20 at a J. Crew warehouse sale.

I love this jacket because while I have a full dress under it, I didn’t have to. I will probably just pair it with boots for rainy days where I want to go to the grocery store dressed like a hermit. Honestly that’s why I own a lot of the long coats I own, even though we live in North Carolina where the weather is mostly temperate. It even has a deep hood to fit my bun, a crucial measure for what jacket makes the cut. I love it even more since its pink which has been my favorite color to wear for some time now. It just adds to my “girlish charm” even though I’m a grown woman now.

Even though I have several pairs of Hunter boots at this point. I always come back to the red ones. These are the Huntress model which has a wider calf diameter which I need if I’m going to wear them with pants. It’s also slightly short which works out nicely since I am a munchkin. I usually pair these the same way with black and white for a pop of color or with all monochrome of a color like here. The Hunter boots are totally worth the cost. I have yet to have any sort of damage to mine *knock on wood*. As long as you get the buffer spray to maintain the shiny gloss, you should be good to go. I would caution you though, these are definitely rain boots and not all weather boots. I don’t care what other blogger say, adding those boots socks does not a winter boot make. Still, totally my favorite weather shoe.

Do you have Hunter boots? If so, what color did you snag? *Asking for a friend who is me*

J. Crew Warehouse Sales, Again

I had no intention of doing one of these on a J. Crew Warehouse sale as I’ve done one before in the past. There’s an older extensive post about one of the traveling warehouse sales here and here. But there’s a J. Crew warehouse sale this weekend at the Lynchburg, VA location. The sale is at a new location. Its the former Millrace Clearance store location. The entrance will be the main entrance at the glass doors.

I love warehouse sales. My favorite thing about them is that I get to see some of my favorite J. Crew peoples. We had an early sneak peek this evening and as usual, I didn’t go to blog but I can give you some shots of my haul. Outdoor Explore with Air Boats

IMG_5393

Shirt| Jeans| Purse |Belt| Sneakers (sold out| Similar)| Sunglasses (Old Cole Haan C718 25| Similar for less | Similar)

We decided to take a last minute small family vacation to Orlando for a week. Usually, I skip summer vacation in favor of something in the fall for our anniversary but this year, my job has been wearing me a little thin. I was rapidly approaching burn out so a little get away was a must. My sister in law came with and she asked for one thing, to go airboating. That quickly became priority number one for us since it could be tackled in just one afternoon.

I like to feel like and look like myself on vacation and a striped shirt with a white pair of jeans is my standard fare uniform. Although we were on a boat with the possibility of getting soaked in swamp water *yuck*, this was still what I opted for. Not only does it fit for most casual scenarios, but by wearing long pants and sleeves I could keep my skin safe from the roasting sun and the biting mosquitos at the same time. It was just the wrong scenario to have naked skin.

IMG_6669

IMG_6676

IMG_5390

I’m all about comfort when it comes to vacationing. From the top of my head down, this outfit was perfect for that. The material from the shirt is surprisingly thick so I didn’t spend all day wondering if I was going to sweat through it or if my bra was visible. The pants have the PERFECT amount of stretch to them so much so that reaching of this branch was no biggie. Also, little hint, I own three pair of this exact pair of white jeans which is why I was willing to risk it all. I scored them at an end of the season sale last year and decided to put one pair through the ringer on this trip. The inseam is the perfect length for my larger hips and short frame plus the pocket is finally deep enough for an iPhone! A trait that is worth its weight in gold in women’s pants.

IMG_5387

I feel like I am constantly raving about this Madewell Crossbody Transport Tote but its because its that wonderful. I snagged it by accident because it was on a horrendously good sale but it turns out its one of my most practical purchases ever. I can fit an umbrella, my Nikon, a GoPro, my iphone7, a bottle of water, a pack of tissues and a package of face wipes in this little bag if I play my cards right. It literally hold all the necessities without looking ugly or weighing down my shoulders. It’s a total win.

IMG_5395

All in all, the air boating was an awesome idea. We had so So so much fun although the middle of the day during the middle of the summer isn’t exactly prime crocodile spotting season. We went with Boggy Creek Airboats which was pretty close to Orlando. It was well priced for a day outing. Our tour guide was the absolute sweetest. He made sure that if he spotted something interesting, he pointed it out for us and as the resident biology nerds on the boat, hubby and I appreciated that. We got to see some great native birds which are also native to our neck of the woods but still great to see. I would definitely recommend one of the air boat tours especially if you go late in the evening when its cooler. Either way it was a fun little adventure and a great way to kick off our week. Stay tuned for more from our little trip.

PS. Enjoy this little snap with lovey for the road. 😉

Graduations and Pineapple Dresses

My husband’s sister graduated from college this weekend which is truly a wild concept since I met this kiddo on her 13th birthday. They grow up so incredibly fast and I couldn’t be more proud.

DSC_0206DSC_0367

I ended up wearing one of my absolute favorite dresses in the world. It’s a last season from Ann Taylor but it has been holding up as far as trends quite well. I paired it with one of my favorite classic J. Crew blazers and heels.

DSC_0361DSC_0358

These heels had a pretty bland matte ribbon when produced by J. Crew. I snagged them at a warehouse sale so the ribbon was missing. Instead of buying the same ribbon, I went for this shiny ribbon as a DIY option. This purse was a no brainer as I had to carry my wallet, my dslr camera and obviously tissues for this special day. I got this purse for a Brooks Brothers steal at 80% off. Gasp!

DSC_0328 4DSC_0330DSC_0332DSC_0328 3DSC_0327

This is so far withstanding the test of time. I’ve worn it a few ways since purchasing it, including as a skirt. I think this is the simplest and least fussy so far. Anyway, here are some similar pieces for these older season items.

How I Get Ready in Literally 5 minutes (or Less)

As the resident night owl and self identified morning hater in my house, I’ve honed in the ability to race out of bed and out of the house in twenty minutes or less. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but it’s kind of a skill set of mine. A large portion of it is the ability to choose a professional outfit in under three minutes, prep it and put it on and then stick with it. How many times have you gotten completely dressed only to realize you hate the entire look?

image

The first thing I do is pick an article of clothing that inspires me right away like a beautiful pair of shoes or a flashy pair of pants. Then I center tried and true basics around it. Emphasis on tried and true. If I have a pair of pants that I’m not sure about the fit or a skirt that I always tug to keep down or a shirt that I have to have a special bra for, then a dash and go day is not the day to be experimenting with that.

image

I pick only the clothing that I know I feel awesome in as a basis. Like these pants which are literally my favorite pants in the world. I’ve never had a bad day in them. Then I added the tried and true favorites of this ruffled white button down, these bow shoes and this trench coat which honestly makes its way out of my wardrobe at least twice a week with this mild North Carolina weather.

image

imageSo that’s it! The secret to my dash and go mechanism. Think of some clothing that you ALWAYS feel good in. Keep them ironed if you’re someone who is frustrated by wrinkles so that for a dash and go day they are available.  These days are always the days where I get the most compliments on my outfits.  I look dressed but didn’t over think it. What’s your go to “I need to run out the house” piece?

Denim on Denim and the Clogs

I love all things denim. Nothing screams the weekend to me quite like it. And nothing screams Sunday quite like denim on denim. Double denim always leaves me feeling like the sleek off duty blogger mommy in Trader Joes’. Which brings me to this outfit.

DSC_0184.jpg

fullsizeoutput_9c8

The moment I saw these shoes I knew they called for double denim. The entire outfit is truly framed around them. Earlier this year, I blogged about #shoppingnotstyling where I planned to buy nothing until June. Well I totally caved and bought these shoes. I fell in love with them last year at Madewell and my husband hates them so I left empty handed. I went into the store the other day just to window shop the new collection and these little friends were a smooth $49.99 with an extra 50% off. Husband be gone. I could not resist. And most importantly I didn’t want to. The reason we stopped shopping was to make sure that we only purchased things we loved and I looooooved these shoes from the bottom of my grinch little heart.

fullsizeoutput_9cb.jpeg

This outfit also needed the prerequisite canvas bag because we were honestly headed to the grocery store (I am eating newly purchased Very Berry Cheerios as we speak) and we don’t use the plastic grocery story bags if we can help it. #savethetrees

dsc_0169fullsizeoutput_9d0

Anyway, these shoes make me so happy and I am so glad I broke my shopping fast for them. What item are you lusting over that you know you probably shouldn’t buy?

A Weekend with Bae

dsc_9923

Sweater| Scarf | Vest |Biker Jeans |Boots

I was out of town all last week and so I was thrilled to spend the weekend with my husband. We spent time with some of our nearest and dearest and just poked around one of our favorite small gems in North Carolina, the town of Old Salem.

dsc_9750

I got the opportunity to dig out some gems from my wardrobe. At one time, I had this sweater listed for sale on Ebay and took it down on a whim. Now I can’t believe I ever considered selling such an easy staple piece. It’s so warm and cozy and the long sleeve always makes me feel extra-specially bundled.

dsc_9730

dsc_0015

This puffer vest has been seen literally everywhere which doesn’t stop me from getting great joy from it. It’s been sitting in the back of my closet for the better part of this fall/winter but in the interest of #stylingnotbuying, it’s making a come back. This scarf is one of my absolute favorites but I couldn’t figure out exactly how to wear it. I decided that this outfit needed some texture though and figured it out.

dsc_9686

It was just a great weekend to bundle up and head outside. It was nice to get away if only for a little bit with the stress of what is going on in America and the world at large. I can not imagine a world where hatred spreads like wild fire and I just want to hold tight to my teddy bear of a first generation American. Here’s to love trumping hate.

Come Pack with me

img_4515Call this a guide to squeezing an entire business weeks worth of clothes into a carryon. I’ve flown a lot in my short time on earth and what I’ve discovered is that for some reason I have a very high mistrust for the airline. I fear that my luggage will miss the lay over or that it will be seriously damaged or it will just flat out go missing. So if I travel for less than I two weeks at a time, I always bring a carry on instead of a checked bag.

I have a business trip coming up and here’s how I shoved a week plus worth of clothes into the cutest rolling carryon ever.

img_4554

Sweater| Jeans | Button Down| Purse |Carry-on| Shoes

dsc_0105

I am a button down kind of girl so I snagged enough of them to make it through the week. I’m wearing a plain white one and then packed my three most basic and yet special button downs. Throughout the week, I’ll layer then and mix and match them under the sweaters and the dress in the top left. Each article of clothing is good for any climate and can be mixed and matched for casual and business. Not featured is a standard fair black blazer and my favorite J. Crew lady day coat. When packing for a week, pick the clothing you feel best in.  There will never be a day on this trip where I won’t love what I have.

I also threw in clothes for more casual wear like my favorite pair of mom jeans, two tshirts and some work out clothes. I stacked the items up by genre, all the tops together, all the bottoms and the all the casual clothes.

dsc_0108

Shoes go in the pouch beneath the logo. In the main case I layered the stacks and tucked the underwear at the bottom of the case.

dsc_0117

It takes a bit to smooch them in but it truly is enough clothing for the week.
