Sail to Sable Dress

Dress // Thrifted head scarf // older purse (similar)// J. Crew factory denim jacket

Sail to Sable makes an out of this world shift dress. I wore this navy and white sun blocked shift dress around town yesterday and loved it. Though it’s shorter and tighter than I would ordinary choose, I’m a sucker for a sharp and flattering neckline and a classic color palette so this will definitely live on in my closet for a years to come. I paired it with some of my favorite J. Crew pieces, a denim jacket and a basket clutch and some nude Talbots sandals for a comfortable, no muss preppy look. Perfect for the island.

National Stripes Day

Kate Spade Dress (old | similar|similar)  | Kate Spade Purse (old) | Bracelet| Sunnies | Watch Band

I hear it’s national stripes day. My favorite of all the made up holidays, naturally. We went to Charleston earlier this month and imagine my glee when I went outside and saw this striped set up. Watch me camouflage.

CBF0FF77-63C5-4673-93C6-D01D26CCBE78

I’m such a fan of mixing old with new, resale with just freshly bought and this outfit allowed me to do the best version of that. The dress is a little Kate Spade number that Marcus snapped up for me as a “heard you were having a sucky” week present. The little whale was a find from Plato’s closet, of all places that I heavily weighed not getting. For some odd reason, I thought maybe I had too many critter clothing items and purses. Like that could ever happen.

D3697CD8-D3C3-452F-9BDB-CEC775B5A169

One of my favorite parts of this outfit is the little bracelet. It’s from a local shop owner in Charleston called The Tiny Tassel run by shop owner, Mimi who I’ve talked about before on the blog. Marcus and I went to hang out with her and a bunch of other ladies that weekend and I could not resist purchasing a few goodies while I was in the shop. You should check out her spring line; it’s the most adorable one yet. (Was not paid to say that. In fact I paid for the bracelet. It allows me to stay refreshingly honest and object lol).

A6D44E75-28FD-4DDF-B7D9-881009FAF5ABI think I may have talked about these shoes on the blog before but I almost always get questions about them. They’re a J. Crew hack from some years ago where I swapped out whatever tie they came with for a louder, more exuberant ribbon that I picked up for $2 at a craft store. #makeitwork

And last but not least my trusty, sometimes dusty, Ray Ban clubmasters. Marcus bought these as a gift for me the summer when we first started dating and he said “these are classics and you’lll wear them for years to come”. A decade later and they are still going strong.

Denim Rose Shirt Dress

Dress| Pom Pom LoafersRattan Clutch | Sunnies |Watch Band

It’s been some time since I’ve really bought a piece that I love and this Kate Spade Denim Rose Shirt Dress is definitely a love piece. The denim is really sturdy and heavy and no picture I’ve seen does it enough justice. It’s absolutely high quality. The only thing is the rose is darn near a decal so it feels like the adult version of a screen printed tee. So far so good on durability since it hasn’t cracked yet.

I wore it for a trip to Charleston recently and it was a total win. I blend right in with the magnolias. #camoflauge Because of the thick material, it makes a good transition piece since I don’t technically have to wear a sweater.  I’ve been pairing it with my oldie but goody J. Crew shiny oxfords and a pair of festive printed leggings (usually polka dot). A note about the shoes, I wear those oxfords at least once a week and they are one of the most comfortable shoes I own. While they are no longer available at J.Crew, they are all over the resell sites like poshmark (possibly because people didn’t quite know what to do with them?)

As we get closer to summer, I’m shucking the tights and pairing with these fun little pom pom loafers. I’m sharing this outfit and the dress particularly today because it’s included in this month’s Kate Spade Surprise Sale which means it on super duper sale. At $129, it’s a pretty good price for what you’re getting. What I love about Kate Spade Surprise Sales is that if you have the patient and the shopping deities are on your side, you can snag little gems like this for 90% off sometimes. I love this dress and almost wish I waited but if I’m honest, I’ve gotten so many wears out of it since I first purchased it, I have zero regrets. I think it’ll be a classic piece for me that makes it through several seasons so I am excited to see it for such a good deal. 5FE2C6A3-43FE-4172-88DA-A3EBF4A1A635

I’ve been doing less shopping than I use to. Some because I’m running out of closet room and some because I seem to hate everything. Instead, I’ve been tracking down grail items -the ones that got away- and little unique pieces that would fit right at home in my closet from resell sites like Poshmark and eBay.

My husband has been in love with this dress from the very second they released it in. But I’m morally opposed to spending that much money on a possible one time wear and I passed on it until it popped up on eBay in my size. When he loves something, I at least try to track it down.

4F702E91-7038-4B81-A9AA-6347FAA92403This purse and coat were no brainers for me. The purse was a grail item because isn’t it just deliciously on brand for me? It’s just a little bit of fun add to this outfit. The coat which is going to be the perfect addition to my wardrobe into spring was actually a $5 local thrift shop. It’s the perfect transitional piece as we get just a touch of spring weather and I love it paired with other green prints.

Another Day, Another Rain Boot

44AEA029-54F2-4147-AE96-DE2A1114D701

Jacket | Shirt | Skirt | Boots

For Christmas I only requested rain gear for days such as today. I will happily pair my rain gear even with work clothes. Such is the fate of this happy little pair of purple rain boots.

C7AA319C-7935-441F-AFBC-ECDCD8846796

I think there is a way to be dressed professionally even when wearing rubber wellies. I start with a professional and darn near stern base. Queue layered tweed. Tweed skirt, tweed jacket and a dark blouse with a high and conservative neck like this black jewel studded collared shirt from vintage J. Crew. Make sure to wear leggings to leave very little skin exposed and to avoid a chill.

D06073C5-35EC-4224-BB68-FE9D1B8C0EEE

I caution against this outfit if your workplace is formal or if you meet with different external conservative parties but otherwise, go for it. It’s perfect for a casual, and yet rainy, Friday. I use to wear these boots all the time when I worked in sales. My customers would get a kick out of a full suit, a striped tshirt, and a pair of Hunter boots. While it was stylish and cute, it was also just practical since I would be hoping in and out of the car all day in pouring rain. As with the red pair of boots from my last post, these boots have a wider calf. They’re the purple adjustable back boots to allow me more space to wear pants if I want to.

So what about you? Are you into work clothes meets casual?

A Hint of Pink, I Think.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” – Alfred Wainwright

I’ve lived my life by this quote for so long. Bad weather is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate personal style. With the creation of colorful wellies. There is never a time where I dress for rain or snow where I don’t get the best compliments. Because even in this weather my own style is apparent.

F318ED4F-3111-47FB-9BFB-1A8FF5EB01EF

Today it rained and I could. not. wait. to leave the house because finally, finally I could use this umbrella I got for Christmas (thank you sister in law who listens when I speak), these rain boots (thank you husband who also listens) and this Stutterheim x Madewell jacket that I scored for the low, low price of $20 at a J. Crew warehouse sale.

I love this jacket because while I have a full dress under it, I didn’t have to. I will probably just pair it with boots for rainy days where I want to go to the grocery store dressed like a hermit. Honestly that’s why I own a lot of the long coats I own, even though we live in North Carolina where the weather is mostly temperate. It even has a deep hood to fit my bun, a crucial measure for what jacket makes the cut. I love it even more since its pink which has been my favorite color to wear for some time now. It just adds to my “girlish charm” even though I’m a grown woman now.

65521578-33B0-4C37-9A28-431B53531BC5

Even though I have several pairs of Hunter boots at this point. I always come back to the red ones. These are the Huntress model which has a wider calf diameter which I need if I’m going to wear them with pants. It’s also slightly short which works out nicely since I am a munchkin. I usually pair these the same way with black and white for a pop of color or with all monochrome of a color like here. The Hunter boots are totally worth the cost. I have yet to have any sort of damage to mine *knock on wood*. As long as you get the buffer spray to maintain the shiny gloss, you should be good to go. I would caution you though, these are definitely rain boots and not all weather boots. I don’t care what other blogger say, adding those boots socks does not a winter boot make. Still, totally my favorite weather shoe.

Do you have Hunter boots? If so, what color did you snag? *Asking for a friend who is me*

Kate Spade Gena Pump DIY

The Kate Spade Gena pump was love at first sight. I am crazy for a black shoe with a twist. But seeing it made me think of the graveyard of black pumps that I own that get no love. So instead of buying them, I pulled out this little pump that I’ve had in my closet primed for this DIY. 2D642F61-C872-4B59-9D3B-4420C3238AB1

It’s so simple that you barely need an instructional guide from me but here it is anyway. In addition to wanting to make this shoe, I had a pearl bracelet break recently. It was an inexpensive one that you give to little girls but I’d gotten it as a Christmas present in high school from a friend I at one time held very dear and I wanted to preserve it. Instead of fixing the bracelet that I stopped wearing regularly, I decided to incorporate it into the shoes. I used three of the little pearls on each of the straps to make this happen. I supplemented those little pearls with suede cord that I found in the ribbon aisle at Joann Fabrics.

2A879604-8E18-405F-8789-8D142018EC2789736DC3-03DE-4B86-8E92-DBF835EBD3B158A816E6-D3DC-4FB2-870E-1C9D38256F2A

I sewed small tabs to the back of the shoes  I hot glued the tab closed first that wove it into the back of the shoe. The shoes lining is leather so I made sure to use a thicker quilting needle. Then I sewed the little pearls to the ends of my suede string and tied them through this loop.

1BE48667-E061-4DBA-B829-A5A22329CC40

I am sure you could make magic happen with this shoe in any color with any heel height. I could even see you getting crazy and making this happen with a red ribbon substituted in for the suede strap. Let me know. Do you have a pair of pumps you need to convert to get more love out of them?

Gift Guide for Your Sister in Law

This is my favorite gift guide so far and I almost didn’t finish in time. Tomorrow is the last day for most businesses to get items to you by Christmas so this is actually perfect timing.

My husband and I have been together for almost a decade and in that time, I’ve picked every single gift for every member of his family since the very first holiday. (I like to gift buy and sometimes you need an objective view.) Aside for him, I do the most gift buying for his sister. We spend a decent amount of time together and throughout the year, I find myself picking up tidbits of things for her here and there. We have pretty similar taste, hers just has a bit more edge to it while I tend to air on the side of “honey, I’m home”.

So if you have a college aged sister, one or two of these goodies may work for a last minute gift for her. As per usual, quite a few of these items are small business items like the lapel pin (which is sold out but my sister in law would LOOOOOVE it and Effie’s paper has so many other items though they will not reach you by Christmas necessarily), the women’s march pillow,  earrings and escape bag. SIL gift guide.jpg

Bonus: Here’s a quick gift guide if your sister in law is a bride to be. Mine isn’t but I couldn’t resist a few of these goodies.

Cute Apple Watch Bands

4C83AEB9-6324-4FB4-83A6-4AE6C1556571

This post is long over do. Every time I post an apple watch band, I get quite a few questions about it. Yesterday was no exception. I wore this beautiful pink confetti band on Instastory that I purchased right after I got the watch because I knew it would be a hit for Christmas and it was one several people asked about. Some I’m compiling a list of my favorite apple watch bands that are both utilitarian and discreet. The one I wear most often is the double tour band modeled after the Hermes band that I simply refused to pay for. I grabbed a few on Amazon for less than $20 each and I juggle between the red, the blush and the classic brown leather. More often than not, the one you will see me wearing is the red. I also get excellent wear from the Apple Sport band (which isn’t included here) because I can swim in it without it getting a strange smell like the leather will after some time if you dab perfumes or oils on your wrist.

A2CCACE5-D525-4901-861F-33736C5FE9B6

Also keep in mind, if you end up purchasing a double tour band of your own that you have to wear in it in just the right spot so that the Apple Watch is still close enough to read your heart rate and activity.

So there you are. A round up of my favorite Apple Watch Bands as promised.

Gift Guides for Kids (That aren’t mine)

FE29F1C9-B8CE-4116-92FF-6AC5A1793251

I don’t usually subscribe to gendered gift lists but this seemed to be the easiest way to categorize. However, feel free to dabble from either list for whatever gender your little one may be, as well as the neutral gender list I put together. I give off over indulgent auntie vibes so some of these are a little expensive, especially for a child that isn’t yours and/or if you’re buying for multiples but I couldn’t resist adding a few. Perhaps just take the spirit of the gift into play.

The gift that I can’t seem to recommend enough, this year and every year, is always a book. Yes, I’m that aunt. My husband has been in love with me since the very first time we met (true story, not just hubris) so by our first Christmas together, a mere two months after we started dating, freshman year of college, we knew it was forever. I say that to explain the next very wild statement.

Since our first Christmas together at 18 years old, we having been buying children’s books for our non-existent future children. A little young and fresh in the relationship to be thinking about reproducing. But after a decade of Christmases and other gifting holidays, we’ve amassed quite the little collection. After all this time the break down seems to be that Marcus buys rationale classic stories (Corduroy, Frog and Toad, The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and I air on the side of Femininist, African and Indie books (Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter/ Jumbo Means Hello/ Bad Girls Throughout History). Our children will absolutely have a well rounded reading collection.

Coming in this year for my gift book is “Little Leaders” by Vashti Harrison falling into the “girl’s” guide. Beautifully illustrated and very informative, it’s a great gift regardless of your child’s gender or race and I can not recommend it enough. My copy came in yesterday and I pretty much just cried flipping through it from the beauty of it all. Aside from that being my number one, everything else has my childless stamp of approval.

girlguide

Little Leaders // Maeva Doll (Doesn’t her outfit scream me?) // Hooded Personalized Minion Towel // Princess Duvet Cover // Taco Purse // Party Razor Scooter // Cat Emoji Earrings

boyguide

Drone // Personalized hooded minion towels  // Harry Potter Lego // Storm Trooper Vtech Watch// Astronaut Duvet Cover // Razor Scooter //Paw Patrol Robo Dog and Vehicle

I just recently got as prissy as I am and in my younger years would have honestly preferred the astronaut themed duvet. (Gifting Key to success: know your audience) With that in mind, my favorite list to put together without fail was the gender neutral list. I’m on a kick about gender roles and emotional work and equitable distribution of labor in households lately and I seem to have taken it out on this list. That kick includes teaching our non-existent sons from a very young age how to manage a household and be gentle and vulnerable in safe spaces (i.e. at home) and it starts from a young age with just learning to play pretend in a way that is safe like encouraging them to take part in house. But also teaching our daughters to canoe and kick predators in the face and build houses because they’re all skills a modern girly should have. So there’s that about that and I present to you my favorite list.

neutralguide

Farmer Says Classic// Cash Register // Knex Thrill Ride // Frankie Beats Bat Boogie Has the best reviews I’ve ever seen for a talking toy// Day Trip Plush Canoe (Please buy this for my future child) // Melissa and Doug Fridge Play Food // Hearth and Hand with Magnolia work bench // Jetaire Camper Playhouse

And the item that isn’t included on this list but I encourage you to buy for my future child and save in your garage in any extra space you have, is this little number. My children don’t even exists yet and already they deserve it.

street-vendor-cart (1).jpg

Street Vendor Cart

I demand to know the last time you’ve seen a more perfect toy. Don’t worry, I’ll wait… It’s never happened! This would be so cute as a mobile library (there I go again with the books) or a snack cart or even just for your little ones to play store with stuff around the house. I love it so much I wanna buy it for my dogs. Okay, now I’ve gone too far.

Is there anything that I missed from this list that is a glaring hole like a seasons best seller or something that someone has bought for your little ones in the past that I need to get for the kiddos in my life? Let me know.
