Holiday Gift Guide for Her 2017

Today begins a series of Holiday gift guides, the first and the easiest being for her. This is a very specific “Her” List in that its the list that I would want if I didn’t already own most (i.e. some form of all) of these things. This things are all tried and true by me except for the Away bag which I love love love because of the beautiful Gray Malin print. My favorite thing about this list is that half of the items are from small business including the oxford, the hat, the tassels and to some extent the duffel. I think we tend to think of small businesses only in terms of arts and artisan goods but they definitely extend to wearable goods as well.

Friend’s Christmas Party

Dress// DIY Shoes (Similar) // Earrings // Coat

If you are keeping track here, then you know my husband wouldn’t let me put up the Christmas decorations early. (And by “let me” I do mean he won’t go get them out of the shed and get on a six foot ladder and hang them up for me while I’m at work). And since I can’t decorate  my house, I have no choice but to decorate myself in anticipation of Christmas and to stick it to the man (i.e. my hubby).

I know that Christmas calls for red and green, I get it. But for me, creams, blushes, and black steal the show. Add a bow? And be still my rapidly beating heart.  I have loved a bow since the dawn of time and I am so happy to see them making an appearance all over the place this holiday. And I always go with cream because it’s one of my skins favorite colors. So I’m giving you guys some of my favorite simple holiday party outfits that incorporate those colors plus a bow. From dressy holiday parties to casual evenings with family, you can always throw a bow on it and ignore the traditional Christmas colors.

I am one of those obnoxious people who shop months in advance. That thing where people say you marry your parents and become your parents is totally true. Both my mother and mother in law are usually done shopping by September and they just Dec 24th shop for traditional’s sake. (Mother in law is a New Yorker so 34th st Macy’s at midnight is an easy way to get “cheap” thrills)

Just because we over here have prepped for the Christmas-pocalyse doesn’t mean I can’t help you with Black Friday Deals. Every single thing that I’m wearing (except for this pair of tassel earrings) is 50% off right now as a part of J. Crew Factory’s Black Friday deals. And even the earrings are a fantastic deal at only $12. What a steal for a hand made (I have seen it happen for my very eyes) small shop goody. They are from The Tiny Tassel in South Carolina and would make a fabulous Christmas gift!

My favorite things about this outfit is that it’s dressy if your family does that but also casual enough that you could toss on a cute sneaker or a riding boot and make it more relaxed if that’s what you guys do.

J. Crew Factory Newish Arrivals

The first holiday roll out and J. Crew and J. Crew Factory is always my favorite. This post was not going to be a thing until I saw the  pièce de résistance; the bow coat. With at least 40% off, I know that the coat and the cream bow sweater is what is guaranteed to come home with me. Do you know how good that’s going to look up against my skin? Ugh I’m so stoked. Here are my favorite items that are currently living in my cart waiting for me to waste too many monies.

PS I may have already purchased and received that cream bow sweater.

Cannonborough Collective

You know that thing where you have an idea about someone from online and then you meet them in person and they are totally different and it ruins the image in your head? This isn’t that. My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Mimi of the Tiny Tassel at her shop the Cannonborough Collective while we were in Charleston.

6502EFFB-0CF1-4823-B9BC-5FDDD7341DDD

I follow three schools of thought when I shop; shop small, shop local, shop black (women) and if at all possible do all three. Mimi checks off all the boxes with her little shop that she co-owns with Liz of the Charleston Weekender. I’d followed her on Instagram for a little while because women of color (particularly black women) in preppy spaces seem to be few and far between and I promised myself I would visit her shop if I had the chance because she seemed delightful. Plot spoiler she is! And the shop she co-runs is lovely as well!

The little shop carries the only balloons in downtown, gifts, jewelry and clothes. Her mommy makes the adorable gingham items in her shops. (Take note, Mom. Hint hint.) While she herself makes the tassel earrings that gives The Tiny Tassel it’s name.

If you ever have the chance to visit while in Charleston definitely do so, especially since the shop is right down from two other adorable shops Candy Corner and the instagrammable Sugar bake shop. Can’t find the other shops? Don’t worry they give out the cutest Charleston guide; so useful.

Go follow these ladies on instagram for an eye full of color and lovely.

J. Crew Warehouse Sales, Again

I had no intention of doing one of these on a J. Crew Warehouse sale as I’ve done one before in the past. There’s an older extensive post about one of the traveling warehouse sales here and here. But there’s a J. Crew warehouse sale this weekend at the Lynchburg, VA location. The sale is at a new location. Its the former Millrace Clearance store location. The entrance will be the main entrance at the glass doors.

IMG_7514

IMG_7513

I love warehouse sales. My favorite thing about them is that I get to see some of my favorite J. Crew peoples. We had an early sneak peek this evening and as usual, I didn’t go to blog but I can give you some shots of my haul. I also didn’t keep the price sheets but feel free to pop over to my other post to get a feel for what prices are like.

So that’s everything and in total our haul retails for approximately $4228.50. We ended up spending around $510. I don’t have the talley sheets so I can’t tell exactly what each item costs but I am perfectly happy with our purchases.

Could this post be better quality? Absolutely. But could I get it out in time for you to go to the sale? Not at the same exact time I couldn’t 🙂

If you’re in the area, go enjoy and if you’d like to get on the email blast for J. Crew’s future warehouse sales -both the brick and mortar stores like the Lynchburg store and the Asheville stores as well as the traveling stores- I do believe you can shoot an email to warehousesales@jcrew.com

Final Cut: Where Anthropologie Goes to Die

My husband and I are in hot pursuit of a pink couch for our living room. Think: less flamingo more decadent boudoir. Whatever, its a look. Either way, sofas of this kind usually run upward of $3000 and no matter how much I try to convince myself that that’s a reasonable price for a sofa, it just ain’t happening. Even though Anthropologie has the most beautiful and lux dusty rose blush sofa I have ever seen.

FullSizeRender (28)

We were also in the market for one of Anthro’s floral rug; it’s the deconstucted bouquet for all you die hard fans. I saw it when they originally started selling it for a mean $1,598, a price which my little heart can not bare to spend. Between the price and the cost of shipping, just no.

FullSizeRender (21)

Queue racing thoughts of wanted J. Crew items and how I’d scour the Earth looking for them only to find them at J. Crew warehouse sales (see here and here). I started wondering, could it be that Anthropologie might have a warehouse sale of their own?! The answer is infinitely and unequivocally yes! And even better than a warehouse sale it’s a permanent brick and mortar store within a few hours drive of my house. Insert quick day trip.

The store is located in Augusta, GA at

Final Cut
3137 Washington Rd
Augusta, GA 30907

According to articles I saw while stalking the internet, see (1 |2| 3|4) they use to have a different location but moved. It’s relatively easy to find it’s right off of Exit 199 in Augusta off of Washington rd. It’s very simple to find with GPS, I’m not sure I can say the same for those of us still using Mapquest in these 2000s.

They carry things from Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, BHLDN and Free People. Much of it is new with tags however some of the clothing items may be damaged so its important to inspect for holes, snags and tears. But for the price of the goodies, it’s totally worth it if you a fan of a lot of their higher end items especially the furniture.

A lot of of the reviews of the store on both Facebook and Yelp complain about the prices; many people comparing them to the price of Goodwill furniture. It is incredibly important in this case to keep in mind the type of store this is and is not. It is not a thrift store, these are name brand high end items and an Anthropologie sofa for $300 is truly the Lord’s work.

I didn’t end up at Final Cut to blog or shop for clothes, so I didn’t exactly do in-depth review. But most of the clothes in the store are thrown into boxes. You are more than welcome to look through them but there are also a few clothes hung. go through those first if you’re there for clothing since they are so accessible. You can try on in store unlike a few of the past J. Crew sales but keep in mind the dressing room is communal and closes a half an hour before the store does (6:30 instead of 7:00 pm) so make sure to allocated enough time if you are someone who tries on. Keep in mind that when you purchase that at the register, they will cut out any and all of the name brand takes so resellers beware.

Like I said, I didn’t go to blog but I did take a few videos for instastories so I here are screen shots of those videos. I”ll include the actual video at a later date.

Guess what else I found in this Mountain of Monstrosities?!

IMG_7300

IMG_7299

We saw three pink sofa options and all of them were lovely but had some draw backs that we weren’t willing to live with. The one not featured here is the Linen Willoughby which is listed on the site as having a “generous recline”. When they say generous, they mean it! My 5’4” frame was left with my feet swaying in the breeze like a child and there is no way someone elderly can sit on this chair and just spring back up when they are ready. So we passed on a sofa but found a ton of other items that we needed including a rug.

So here’s what husband and I came away with from the store, a price list of what we paid for it, the original cost, if there was damage,  and if it was something that we were actually in search of per our list of must buys for the house.

Dorette Pendant Lamp- $298 $70 Needed for our upstairs hallway. The shade is coming apart a bit on the upper left but for that price, I own a glue gun.

Sphere Study Floor Lamp Ensemble $998 $50 Didn’t come with a shade but I found one for $20 at Target and I had to fix the part where the bulb connect.

Forbury Dishware- Bowl $20 $5 Small Plate $22 $6 Large Plate $22 $7 Teapot $68 $20 I purchased a full set of these. The only problem is that there is only one of the first plate and three of the other print. I’m not entirely bothered by that yet. I couldn’t pass on the full set.

Max Wanger Waikiki #5 Beach Print 44 x 44 $385 $40 The picture itself was in perfect condition but the frame was cracked but for the price, no complaints.

Constance Curtain Rod $128 $30 $88 $20 and rings I went there with these on the list of things to buy. I hate curtain rods and I think most of them are ugly. So when I saw these online, I knew I needed them if they were available. I snagged two for the living room (one long, one short) and then one for our bedroom.

Towel Ring $28 $5 Gold towel rings seem to be hard to find and this was on my list so I picked it up asap.

Jenny Krauss Ombre Pink Pillow Case $84 $10 This pillow case must have been older because it took me hours to find the listing. It’s in perfect condition though and will look great on my desk chair.

And my  pièce de résistance the rug we went with in mind.

The Purple Garden Rug $1598 $480

FullSizeRender (48)

IMG_7291

They actually had the exact rug that I was interested in, in exactly the size I needed it for $980 which is a steal compared to the site but upon closer inspection the color was way too dark for our living room. This rug was analogous to that with brighter, lighter, friendlier colors that would meld beautifully with our current colors for a fraction of the price. This 9 x 12 rug was a grand total of $480 which was half of the cost of the deconstructed bouquet rug. I was so excited and the guys in the picture did such a beautiful job that a rug that huge fit right into the back of my little SUV without much problem. They had a great method of pulling rugs off the high stacks and did so without a single complaint even though this girl and I both wanted to see rugs on the bottom of the stacks. People in the reviews on their social media commented about the terrible service which was obviously not a problem we had.  (**Disclaimer: we are literally the nicest people in the world to service staff and literally bring out the best in them. I say this not to brag on us but because I am positive that someone else may have actually had a different experience)

Anyway, in total we spent about $917 which is down from $4587.95. I consider this a saving because I literally had the deconstructed floral rug in my cart online and with shipping it would have cost me a grand total of $985 which means I won. The store was absolutely great and worth the drive to Georgia and they’ve also recently announced that they are opening a new store in Marlboro, NJ which makes perfect sense since their headquartered in Philadelphia.

Keep an eye on their social media. A lot of the times, they do additional sales and they will announce them on there especially instagram where they post a sampling of merchandise.

Instagram | Facebook | YelpTwitter

Bonus: Because the warehouse was in Georgia, I got to see my bestfriend in the entire world since we were seven. Can you believe we’ve been friends twenty years?! It didn’t happen if there isn’t a photo so here you go.

Rattan Straw Purse

One of my favorite trends this season that I will actually hop on board with its the Straw/ rattan/ bamboo bag. I am #teamwicker until the death of me. If you are following along with trends on Instagram, you know that they’re making experiencing a bit of a revival with the appearance of the aptly named, cult classic, the Ark bag by Cult Gaia. I briefly considered pulling the trigger on that purse but instead decided to pull out this classic little J. Crew cutie in the name of #stylenotbuy.

purse

I scored this litte wicker bag at J. Crew warehouse sale some seasons ago and I am thrilled to see that they’ve bought it back once more. It’s the perfect bag for brunch in that it has enough room for credit cards, lipstick, phone, tampons and keys with a bit of room to spare.

This purse honestly goes with all of my dresses which is all you’ll be seeing until September from me since it’s already a million degrees in my neck of the wood. You’ll also be seeing instant replays of these espadrilles since they are my favorite shoe of the moment. Here are also a few of my favorite rattan purses this spring. Just in time for mother’s day!

There’s no such a thing as a stripe I don’t like but today even more so than ever. I wore this dress for J. Crew’s fictitious, yet undeniably real, holiday #nationalstripeday. I passed on the bell sleeve trend before because I couldn’t quite seem to find one that worked for me. But I saw this dress and instantly freaked, which was a good thing because it’s sold out twice since I first purchased.

A lot of the time, the length on these dresses airs on the side of “cutie at the beach” which means they’re hard to transition to the office. Add to fact that I need an extra inch or so to accommodate my hips and rear and a lot of these dresses are just way too short. This dress though is the perfect length. It was the ultimate first try for me for bell sleeves and like I always do I couldn’t resist going full throttle into the trend. I now own five of these pieces. Oh well, Kanye shrug what can you do? Anyway, where are you on the bell sleeve trend?

Denim on Denim and the Clogs

fullsizeoutput_9cd.jpeg

VestShirt| Pants | Clogs| Canvas

I love all things denim. Nothing screams the weekend to me quite like it. And nothing screams Sunday quite like denim on denim. Double denim always leaves me feeling like the sleek off duty blogger mommy in Trader Joes’. Which brings me to this outfit.

DSC_0184.jpg

fullsizeoutput_9c8

The moment I saw these shoes I knew they called for double denim. The entire outfit is truly framed around them. Earlier this year, I blogged about #shoppingnotstyling where I planned to buy nothing until June. Well I totally caved and bought these shoes. I fell in love with them last year at Madewell and my husband hates them so I left empty handed. I went into the store the other day just to window shop the new collection and these little friends were a smooth $49.99 with an extra 50% off. Husband be gone. I could not resist. And most importantly I didn’t want to. The reason we stopped shopping was to make sure that we only purchased things we loved and I looooooved these shoes from the bottom of my grinch little heart.

fullsizeoutput_9cb.jpeg

This outfit also needed the prerequisite canvas bag because we were honestly headed to the grocery store (I am eating newly purchased Very Berry Cheerios as we speak) and we don’t use the plastic grocery story bags if we can help it. #savethetrees

dsc_0169fullsizeoutput_9d0

Anyway, these shoes make me so happy and I am so glad I broke my shopping fast for them. What item are you lusting over that you know you probably shouldn’t buy?
