One Room Challenge Week 4: Striped Tile

Hey hey! First off, sending you peace and healing. I know the world is a fire storm particularly for black Americans but we are going to get to and through. Now, as a reminder, we’ve decided to participate as guest in the Spring One Room Challenge to renovate our coastal kids bathroom. The One Room Challenge is a biannual forum -April and October- for participants to have a fun and supportive way to share their room transformations over a six week period. This week, we’re talking striped tile.

Talk Striped Tile to Me

Tub Tile

In this week’s edition of the PrepFord Home, TILE! First up, tub tile. Our tub got a layer of water proofing, followed by tile. I wanted the niche to be this powder blue. But in the spirit of prepster joy, I thought, ‘why not striped tile’? So we went with a stripe the width of the niche all the way around the tub.

Floor Tile

Next up, striped floor tile. I asked over on Instagram which way people would lay these striped hex tiles. It was a 52/48 split in favor of parallel to the tub and not perpendicular to the tub. I heard everything from ‘perpendicular gives me a headache’ to ‘parallel would be hard to line up’. Truthfully, we’d already decided on the layout. I just love to hear from you guys. Sink

Houston, we have a sink. And best of all, I didn’t cry when it went in. (I have this compulsive desire to cry when I’m really happy). I have wanted this sink for literal years and I am finally here. I’m so happy I don’t know what to do with myself. The combination of the sink and the floor made this bathroom feel really coastal cottage and we are getting so close to the finish line.

Our contractor had to quickly put the dry wall back after the plumbers hooked up the rough ins on this wall. The sink has two faucets and each one needs hot and cold so that is what you see running behind this wall. This sink if you are interested in a coastal kids bathroom of your own for your littles.

I would say if you decide to go with this sink, the volume of additional legwork to get the faucets, valves and drain in brass is exponential and I’ll try and cover that in a separate post one day soon.

Shower Fixtures

If you saw our last one room challenge bathroom, this shower fixture looks familiar to you. It’s the same one that is in our downstairs bath but with a tub fixture. My must haves were exposed plumbing, brass, sprayer and large head. This shower met all of my needs for an affordable price so it was my first choice. Plus the warm brass looks lovely next to the cool striped tile.

Perpendicular or Parallel

Because the sink is really the “wow” moment in this bathroom, it only made sense that we go with a striped tile that is parallel to it and tub. It also makes the eye travel with the pending shiplap behind the sink.
