One Room Challenge Week Eight: Guest Room REVEAL!

Hi! Happy Wednesday, friends! I am so happy to have you here for my One Room Challenge Reveal. As a reminder, The One Room Challenge is a biannual forum -Spring and Fall- for participants to have a fun and supportive way to share their room transformations over a six week period. This time around, an additional two weeks were granted to account for COVID delays. I participated for the first time as a Featured Designer (pinch me!) to renovate our guest areas, both a bedroom and bathroom. Befores of the Bedroom

Bedroom Reveal

The Walls

The walls were truly the first thing to go. We replaced the incomplete border and interesting shade of green with  this Magnolia Home Wallpaper in blue and white grid from Calico.  Calico. . The wallpaper truly transformed the space and gave it an instantly lighter feel. In an oddly helpful turn of events, it also made it really simple for me to see if the decor in here was level.

While this room needed very little paint thanks to the wallpaper, I did freshen up the trim with Oyster White by Sherwin Williams. We’ve used it on the trim in most of the other areas in our home. I wanted to make sure this room was consistant.

The Bed

We’ve had this bed for years. It’s a vintage Facebook marketplace find that I located with the terms “French bed” “Louis XIV bed” “cane bed” And though it’s a full size bed, it’s received rave reviews in it’s past life in previous guest rooms from both singles and couple alike. Keeping it was a no brainer.

It’s paired here with an easy base of white sheets and quiltt and topped with the striped Pioneer Blanket from LLbean,. By layering on this fun plaid fabric from Fabricut, the preppy fun level is instantly dialed up. The plaid also mimics the wallpaper pattern which was key in a space that has so many prints. I pulled the fabric from the pillow case and recovered the chippendale desk chair. Like the bed in this room, this chair has lived many lives and by spray painting and covering with this fabric, it fits in this space and gives another presentation of this pattern.

Also if you’ve been here a while, can you believe I sewed those pillow covers myself? Dare I say I may finally be over my fear of the sewing machine.

The Desk

Every guest bedroom we’ve ever had includes a desk. We’ve always had siblings in college and traveling work friends. With the added layer of the pandemic, it’s been really nice to have these dual purpose spaces since we’ve been working from home for over a year. It’s also a good solution if you’re small space living since you can make use of a desk and nightstand all in one. This Parsons desk in particular is one that’s followed us from home to home. It’s a classic shape that fits into any space.

The desk is topped with the Hudson Valley Curves No. 1 Lamp. It’s a dream for it’s clean lines and shape. Not only does it take up very little physical space, it also takes up very little visual space. Add on the rattan for warmth and it’s right at home here.

The Nook

I love awkward little corners. The moment I saw this one I knew it would be perfect for a reading nook. It’s the best place to curl up and escape the busyness outside this room. The Landon Leather Chair from Apt2B is the perfect chair for this corner. It’s big and spacious and pretty much calling for an afternoon of reading. I brought in my favorite Mark Maggiori painting of all time, Once Upon A Time. This western piece obviously needed to be paired with some cowhide right? Pulling in this Loloi Rug from the Grand Canyon collection was the only choice.

And what’s a reading nook without lighting? This little area called for the Girard Lamp from Hudson Valley Lighting. It’s perfect for a reading corner with it’s timeless shape and multiple levels of brightness from it.

The Lighting

The only non-brass piece of lighting in this space. The before image has a beautiful brass ceiling and while I loved it, it was actually a little gaudy for this room and threw off very little light. I selected the Arvada Ceiling fan in Anvil Iron from Kichler. We’ve owned Kichler fans before and love them. They are good for airflow -a must in the South- and this one is cordless. There’s a wall switch that acts as a remote instead of the pull chains.

The Floors

Because the floors in this home are too our taste, we aren’t going to change them. If it ain’t broke. So instead we brought in area rugs for warmth and additional texuture.

The Nuray rug from Apt2b under the bed brings in red that calls back to the floor and the art in this space. It has all the allure of a traditional Turkish rug without any of the price. The color and pattern on it will also help it to remaining looking new. While this room won’t see a lot of foot traffic, I always find a patterned rug to be easy to maintain.

Personal Details

Just because this is a guest room, doesn’t mean we can’t bring in little moments that are highly personal. This Jill Rosenwald Bee Bowl in Pripet print that is doing the absolute most in the best way. I’m using it as a vase but it would be lovely in a living room on a large coffee table or in the kitchen as a fruit bowl. Like all of Jill’s incredible custom pieces, the bee bowl was thrown in her Boston studio and sent to live in it’s permanent home space here with me.

We also bought in other fun little custom pieces like these Oxford Pennant Hometown banners. There’s a banner for each of our places; Philly for me, Brooklyn for Marcus and Raleigh for our mutual adult home. The Philadelphia and Brooklyn banners are carried in stock but for some odd reason little Raleigh didn’t exist. No problem since Oxford does custom banners. They make the room feel so special and I am sure we will have them for years to come.

Another of this room special details is this abstract painting above our desk. Christine Dore Trant creates custom abstract painting using travel memories. We collaborated on this piece by choosing a few of our most memorable travel photos; hydrangeas on Nantucket, Tradd Street in Charleston, our favorite restaurant in OBX. Christine then pulled a few of our the featured colors in those pieces and voila this beauty was made. Every time I see it, it makes me smile and remember our adventures.
