One Room Challenge Week One: Design Plan

coastal bathroom renovation plan

A happy happy Thursday to you guys, gals and gender nonconforming folx. I wanted to share with you all that we’ve decided to participate as guest in the Spring One Room Challenge. The One Room Challenge is a biannual forum -April and October- for participants to have a fun and supportive way to share their room transformations over a six week period.

Check out the rest of the weeks in my post:

Week 1 // Week 2 // Week 3 // Week 4 // Week 5 // Week 6

Husband and I renovated our bathroom this past year for the Fall One Room Challenge. It was our first one and it was somewhat terrifying but rewarding. (You can see our first and last weeks here and here). This year, we’ve got our bearings and we are seasoned experts.

Because of COVID-19, the official start of ORC has been pushed back. It’s a dangerous time with social distancing to have people in and out of your house and to be out and about shopping for supplies. Thankfully, we actually started long before the shut down orders and our contractor is a one man band since our bathroom is so small. So we were actually able to safely move forward.

Enough about that, here’s what we are tackling…

Upstairs Bathroom Renovation

Last year, we tackled our downstairs guest bathroom with the expectation that this year, we would do our upstairs “master” bathroom. There are two bedrooms in the upstairs of our house and we personally use both of them; one as our bedroom and one as a sitting room/ office. We recognize that if our family ever grows, one of these rooms becomes a nursery so our bedroom is across from it. If it grows again, we move downstairs to the actual master and use upstairs for kids.

Because of that, we are designing this bathroom for us in the here and now but also as a kids bathroom for future use.

Current State for Our Bathroom

Here’s what we are currently working with. We are not unhappy with this bathroom all together because we did the basics when we moved in like changing out the light fixture, changing the mirror and painting the vanity.

Bathroom Problems We Need to Solve For

  1. Tight bath fitter shower: We went through this with our last bathroom. We hate bath fitters in showers. The way they feel and jut out into the space is just irritating. And with the small space in our room, we need all the space we can get so out this goes.
  2. Floors: Two words. Vinyl floors. We don’t love them. They don’t feel special or lux.
  3. Vanity: The vanity in this space takes up a lot of visual space and real estate in this room. We want an option that allows for this small space to feel more open and visually light.
  4. Minimal Design: This bathroom is perfectly fine. Especially compared to what we initially started with on the day we moved in but it’s builder’s grade and unspecial and we just want it to feel like the rest of our home. We especially want it to feel like the other “wet” spaces in our home (kitchen and bathroom). My mind finds it stressful to enter a home where all the room don’t look like they were designed with the same aesthetic in mind so I want to keep our home cohesive.

Future State for Our Bathroom Reno

I have been scheming and plotting on this bathroom for over two years. We knew even before the other bathroom what we wanted to do in this one. Here are some design inspiration photos that have been my guiding light towards what this space will become.

Design Plan

I have been plotting on an affordable way to have a trough sink in our home for months and months. I have come to the conclusion that there is no affordable way. So I am just going to go for it. I want what I want and we will be here a little while so I am making it happen.

Marcus’ sister was kind enough to drive the four hours to snag this sink for us in a long distance Facebook marketplace to Charleston for around half the usual price. So my dream bathroom is off to the races.

The one big thing in this bathroom that isn’t shown above is that I am team all brass everythaaaang. The Kohler faucets and the accompanying fixtures don’t come in brass so I will keep you all posted on all of the acquiring and installing.

I’ll be updating every week as though the ORC is currently live and show you a reveal at the end of six weeks. Doing so will give me just a hint of joy in the world and hopefully you as well. Stay safe, my friends.
