Coastal Grandmother’s Cottage- The Details Week 7

This is such a delayed post and yet here we are. As we are rounding out One Room Challenge, I am at the point where I’m picking the finishing touches. As a reminder, I am renovating our old home for my mom in the internet’s best kept secret. At least for now since she rarely reads the blog. You can see more about my intent in week one’s post. This week is for finishing touches. While, furniture is impactful, what really pulls a space together are the lighting, art and fabrics. So while this week, I am frantically painting every single ceiling, I’m also dreaming of pulling in the delicate items that will get me across the finish line.

Lighting

I am keeping the lighting so simple in this space. Each room in this house is equipped with my favorite Hunter Fan complete with remote control. In our our home, I might consider switching them out for something more decorative. Here, I am attempting to tread the line between form and function in someone else’s space. In the event that my mom grows tired of living here, whether it’s a 10 months from now or ten years from now, I want the home to continue to perform well for a renter. So I think for now, the Hunter Fan stays.

To compensate, I’ll lean on high style for the rest of the lighting from the exterior where I’ll use this Refuge Lantern from Progress Lighting to the inside where I’ll lean on high style table lamps like this one from Serena and Lily. And if you were here when I was pondering where to pull in a polka dot, which is my mom’s signature print, I’ve decided to pull it in through the lighting. We have a few of these Kate Spade polka dot lamps at our house and they’ve never fit quite right in our spaces but they are PERFECT for my mom.

Art Selections

Art is my favorite and most nerve wrecking part of any project. Art in our own home is so easy but for someone else who isn’t having input it’s paralyzing. I keep saying “would she actually like this or am I picking what I want?” And I’m totes picking what I want. What’s really helped is that last week, I went home and raided my mom’s storage for art, picture frames and things that already belonged to here which assuaged a lot of my worries. Then I decided to supplement with these gorgeous pieces from Artfully Walls, who I’ve partnered with this go round.

I wanted to pick prints that were coastal and not beach-y. And I know those sounds like the same things but in my mind, beachy is like Home Goods or a beach house or nautical. While coastal is just the essence of? I could be babbling here but I know it when I see it. This French Riviera and Summer Stripes #3 felt perfect for the living area. And it’s a cool little Easter egg that this light house is actually in North Carolina.

My plan is to accent these art pieces with photos from a shoot that my siblings and I did during week four. Black frames with thick matting is the plan but whoever knows if the plan will fully come to fruition or not. We’re going to see what we can do. For now, check out the other rooms as people wrap up much heavier lifting that I am. See you next week for reveals!
