Mood Boards for the Coastal Grandmother’s Cottage ORC Week 3

Hey hey! Welcome to week three of One Room Challenge where we are refreshing our previous home -secretly but with all of you- for my mom’s move to North Carolina. You can see more about the why in my week one post. But for now, I am stoked to share some mood boards with you and a little direction for the project I am calling Coastal Grandmother’s Cottage.

Exterior Design for the Coastal Grandmother’s Cottage

This way over simplifies our intent for the exterior but we plan to do a light refresh of painting both the shutters and the door with Clare’s Hyperlink. The exterior of the house is the perfect khaki color and this color will play off it well. By adding the Refuge Light from Progress Light and some new brass touches like a Nantucket light ship basket door knocker and some new house numbers, we’ll keep our refresh light but high impact. Marcus is desperately shooting for scope creep by advocating for working shutters. I am on the fence due to cost and timing. We’ll see if we can find a set that are appropriate for our house at an architectural salvage or Habitat for Humanity. I’ll keep you posted on this.

Living Room Design and Moodboard

The living room is actually one of the most difficult rooms in the space. It’s long and lean and might. Ideally, it would be divided into two seating areas but because it’s so slim, it will have one centered seating area. Pulling in multiple creams and blue, we’ll bump up the coastal feel with fresh white walls, breezy linen curtains, and pops of navy. The room currently has a set of built in bookshelves. I am wrestling with the idea of pulling them down and starting over with a much slimmer profile. If that happens, it needs to be in the next few days so I can strategize a replacement set or at least some decor.

Primary Bed Room Design and Moodboard

My mom told me once that she’s always wanted a big wood bed. So we’re going to make that happen with a vintage Cannon ball bed in a cherry color. While cherry is not necessarily “in” at the moment, it’s totally my mom’s style and is going to be complimentary to the blues and greens. I am dialing up the coastal and preppy with luxurious striped bedding and touches of rattan and white. The game plan is for this room to feel comfy from the very first day.

Guest Bedroom Design and Moodboard

The guest bedroom is my favorite room so far. It doesn’t look like much here but it’s going to feel so chic with a printed blue and white headboard with a matching bench from one of my favorite companies to work with ever, Rifle Paper Co. The matching bench will give guest a place to put on their shoes but also pull the space together and feel intentional. I’m wrestling with the idea of some pink but still want the space to feel chic and not too too personal. To round out the space, I am of course, going to have all white sheets. Gives the feel of a brand new hotel while allowing you to throw sheets in the washer on hot with no problem between guests.

Kitchen Design and Moodboard

The kitchen was the most complicated space to make decisions. So much of the colors and mood are already established but I still want it to feel like my mom. I know she has all red small appliances from her stand mixer to her microwave. I want them to integrate into this space without feeling just dropped in. As usual, I’m going to do that with art. This piece, Afternoon Break by Colin Bootman, includes all of the colors seen in this room and feels so much like my mom who loved the art piece of Colin’s that we used in our living room. The one idea I am still wrestling with is whether I am painting the cabinets a powder blue or a taupe. I am not the biggest fan of cabinets painted in any of the khaki/gray family. It’s not the color, it’s totally me. I can never quite pick it properly. But I want to lean into a color that is included in the floor tile to tie the space neatly together. Whichever color I choose will make a huge difference in direction for this space so I want to pick wisely. Especially with how time consuming it is to sand and paint cabinets. But we’ll see what I decide.

Okay that’s all for today! Thanks for hanging out with me while I talk through the Coastal Grandmother’s Cottage and be sure to check out the other spaces that folks are completing during this 8 week time period.

XO Victoria
