We’ve created a highlight video of the year for the last five years. Somehow they’ve never made it to the blog. It’s a 1 Second Everyday video. Literally one second of every single day, created with the 1 Second Everyday app. With it, we remember the highs, the lows and everything in between. It captures everything from the important to the mundane.
We originally saw this idea from Bri and Tom of The Yellow Note and we loved it so much and decided to do it for ourselves. We always joke that we are not a home where we can create a lot of video content and especially not with ASMR because we are always talking crap to each other, laughing incredibly loudly with Sirius and Remus galloping from room to room. No complete silence. We love the fabric of the sounds in our home and so we include so much of that in the video and then layer it with a song that really captured what the year felt like for us.
This year’s song is Taylor Swift’s Lover and I don’t think we’ve ever cried so hard at any of our own content. It’s our last year with Remus after all. (That’s what we mean by highs and lows by the way.)
How to Do It
These videos can be put together using the app from 1 Second Everyday in either the Apple or Android store. The app itself is free and allows you to put together a montage of videos to create a personal movie. While the app is free there is a pro version that allows you an unlimited amount of projects, longer snippets and easier music editing without having to leave the app. If you’re just starting the free version of the app is a great choice while you get into the groove and get use to it. We used it for two year before upgrading to the Pro for ease.
Tips and Tricks for Making Your Own
Every year, folks tell us they would love to make an annual 1 Second Every Day for themselves. Since we are one month into the year, this feels like the perfect time to give you the heads up so you can make one of these for yourself. Over the years, we’ve amassed some ideas for how to stay on track for the entire year and we’ve included them below.
- Remember to do it: I know that’s self explanatory but this is truly the hardest part is making sure you remember to capture the video from your phone. You can set a repeating alarm in your phone, in your Outlook or in the app.
- Take video from your phone: You can record video in the app itself or in your phone. We tend to record video in our phones and push it together at the end of the year. This takes some time (and some storage) but whatever gets it done is how you do it.
- Be a team player: Marcus and I build our video together. Not only does this hold us accountable, it doubles the amount of footage and makes sure that we are each in it. It’s fun to see how other people have experienced the life you share over the years. We spend so much time with our siblings that we may start to crowd source for days where we are missing footage.
- Commit to which way you want to record: We film our videos portrait (vertically) because we are primarily on Instagram. But if youtube or facebook is your preference for sharing, then make sure you are recording landscape (horizontally).
- Live photos are your best friend: Seriously, if you have an iPhone, leave your Live Photo setting on when you take photos. You can turn live photos into videos and that has come in so clutch for us! (Here’s how) Just make sure that you crop the video to the right size so that it fills the entire frame when you’re editing it all together at the end of the year.
- No pressure: If you miss a day, you miss it. There are 365 days in a year and 60 seconds in a minute. That makes your video 6 mins long if you catch every single day. But most likely, you won’t. And that’s okay. Whether you capture a minute, two minutes or ten minutes, then you’ve captured memories that you didn’t capture before and that’s special.

You can see how ours changed and improved from year to year. You can see how different our life looks. And most importantly, how much we love doing these. Wishing you luck with yours,
