The Laundry Room
Hi hi! I’m so happy to have you here to reveal what is arguably my favorite space of all time. We built this laundry room that’s in the May issue of Country Living Magazine. It’s the stuff of our wildest dreams. Marcus has always wanted a laundry room. It’s been on his non-negotiable list since the first time we rented a place. And each time we get a place, there is no laundry room. So this go round, I was bent and determined to give the man what he wants.
Before and Rationale
Our laundry area previously was a pantry off of our kitchen. While it was perfectly functional, that hike down the stairs in the middle of the night to snag a washcloth or in the morning because I left wet laundry in the dryer was the least fun walk of my life. Though I can say with conviction, I definitely gained muscle mass in the time I was toting loads down the stairs since I always wait for a full load.
We began exploring where we could put a full laundry room in our home. We thought about an area in our family room, eating some room in our hallway upstairs, stealing some room in our bathroom. None of these options were good ones. Where we netted out was stealing a hall closet and a bit of a bedroom. The hall closet is located right behind the plumbing in our bathroom so we knew it wouldn’t be a bear to get water to it.

The Wallpaper
I said if I ever got a laundry room, that I would get this Sara Fitz wallpaper for it. What’s cheekier than a wallpaper that has laundry on it for a laundry room? Nothing. That’s what. This wallpaper is preppy and fun and chic. And more than that, it’s from a wonderful person. You know we stan a small woman owned business over here and we just love Sara and her brand of preppy papers and goods.
Paired with this trimmed flat roman shade from Smith and Noble and an Ikea pantry painted in Sherwin Williams’ ‘Naval‘, this laundry room is a match made in our preppy heaven.
The Stackable Washer and Dryer
I always joke that the people who make the product are never the people using it. That is not the case with this LG Stackable Washer and Dryer from Lowe’s Hardware. It’s designed so thoughtfully. This coming from a woman who has sworn off stackable washer and dryers until now. Finally a stackable that is compact because it’s an all in one. We needed something that was slim enough to fit in here that would allow us to have a pantry for storage and dryer and a sink. This one met the bill coming in at 27 inches wide and 30 inches deep. And as a part of the shorter population, I am grateful to have all of the dials at the right height. We’ve also only had older sets so I was surprised at the technology in this one that auto-selects the correct settings and has steam for sanitizing. The dogs beds have never smelled cleaner.
Floors
I have raved about my love for Fireclay Tile floors before and that is not going to stop now. In my mind’s eye, I kept seeing a navy and white large format checker floor. But no one sells them. Except Fireclay. They have a wide selection of colors and finishes and I was able to make my vision come to life with these beautiful 8’x8′ tiles in the colors Blue Velvet and Daisy. I made sure to select the matte finish to avoid slip.
The Finishes
I wanted this room to feel like every other room in our home. So by pairing mixed finishes like the brass on the mortise lock from Nostalgic Warehouse and the Greenport Light from Hudson Valley and the chrome from the pantry hardware with the vintage sink hardware, I pulled together a collected finished product.
We made sure to follow our usual policy of Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue in this room. (See this post for more about it). And this sink proved itself beautifully as our something old. We brought it home from an Arch Salvage adventure and it cleaned up so nicely. I had one of these sinks in my bathroom growing up and I feel a warm sense of nostalgia every time I wash anything in it. Like the stackable, this sink is coming in hot at a compact 18 inches just making it squeeze in this hole.
Because this room is so small, we had to make the most of the space and our time. An easy example is this L.L. Bean Boat and Tote which is perfect for sorting laundry and hauling it across the hall. The rest of the accouterment in this space were styled and planned by the lovely Rachel Rivers who was our stylist for the CL Mag shoot. She is incredible and if you are looking for a stylist in the Raleigh/Durham area, she’s got your back.
