Hi there! Today, I’m sharing with you a quick weekend project that I completed with Spoonflower wallpaper. We’ve finished renovating the vast majority of our entire upstairs. (*pew pew pew*) and are now circling back to our bedroom to give it some love, starting with this dresser. We’ve had this dresser for years. It’s lived many lives in our homes and it was time for it to get a little update
I mean how adorable is this Bee Life Toile by independent artist, Lucinda Wei. It was irresistible and perfectly on brand. A bee and a toile? I absolutely love that Spoonflower has this huge assortment of designs and styles created by independent artist like Lucinda. It’s so important to me to support small businesses and makers and Spoonflower does that by paying each artist a commission. And they have a ton of artist since Spoonflower has over a million designs; designs which can be put on anything from wallpaper and fabric to home decor. And even though their artists are world wide, their products are manufactured right here in North Carolina!
So of course, I hopped in my car for a quick tour of the Spoonflower headquarters. As someone who likes to know how the sausage gets made, I had a fantastic time. I saw everything from where the fabric is stored (in reams in the biggest closet I’ve ever seen) to what kind of ink was used (water-based) to what creates the images on the wallpaper (giant printers). I even got to see my very own wallpaper get printed!
How I Wallpapered the Dresser
I knew I wanted to create a seamless image on the dresser using my newly obtained wallpaper. Spoonflower carries three types of wallpaper; removeable peel and stick, pre-pasted removeable smooth and traditional wallpaper that requires a paste. I wanted the ability to shift the wallpaper and line up the edges so I opted for pre-pasted. It’s water activated so I was able to wet it and slide it around the smooth surface of the dresser and get it just right.
Materials
- Spoonflower wallpaper (2 rolls of 2’x12′)
- Scissors
- Xacto Knife
- Squeegee
- Microfiber towel
- Drape an entire piece of wallpaper from the top of the dresser to the bottom of the feet. Careful to account for the nooks and crannies that the wallpaper will have to go into. Follow the instructions to activate the wallpaper.
2. Begin smoothing the wet wallpaper, working from the bottom up to the top. Gently smooth the wallpaper into the cracks and crevices.
3. Carefully use an exacto knife or sharp razor to cut the open slits of the drawers. Smooth the edges of the newly slit paper to wrap around the drawer so that the cuts dry wrapped and smooth.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 with another piece of wallpaper. Line the wallpaper up with the first by choosing a very obvious place in the repeat. (I lined up the large honeycomb for my design.)
5. Cut away any excess paper on the top surface of the dresser. (I was careful to leave enough wallpaper remaining that I could wrap it around the edge like a present.) Wrap the excess paper on the sides and smooth. Continue the process by lining up the pattern on the side and repeating the previous steps.
By continuing the pattern, the front and side of your piece should look like one single image. Smooth any remaining wrinkles from your work and step back and let it dry for a few hours. The image will appear a bit transparent and wrinkled until it dries fully. This is normal with wallpaper. Trust the process.
And there you have it! A unique one of a kind dresser that adds interest and fun to this previously little drab corner of our room.
