Who I’m Driving To: Andra Day

I drive a lot. I mean a lot A LOT. I usually opt to listen to podcasts but at some point during the day, I give it a rest and listen to an artist’s entire body of work. Each Monday, I’ll feature an artist that I find myself loving so much that I cut off my beloved podcasts. This week “Who I’m Driving to” is Andra Day.

If you’ve never heard of Andra Day please shimmy out from under that rock you live under and give her a listen. If her voice is not one you recognize from intentionally looking for her music, you may recognize her from everything the holiday themed Apple commercial with Stevie Wonder that played nonstop on Hulu around Christmas. Or perhaps you’ve seen her cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself while you were binge watching Youtube videos at two a.m.

Whether you recognize her music or not, the time is now because Andra Day is worth a listen. With a look that is the love child of  Rihanna and Amy Winehouse, Andra Day is charming right from first glance. But then she opens her mouth and you are positively blown away. Her ballads are relatable and make you want to hug yourself. I was sold from the very first line of her song, Rise Up.

You’re broken down and tired Of living life on a merry-go-round And you can’t find the fighter But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out.

Starter songs:

Rise Up

Forever Mine
