I am the ultimate fan of the one piece suit and swimsuits that are “covered up”. It’s not about the modesty for me, although I respect that it plays a factor for many women. I just love the lazy factor of it.

I love a bathing suit that can double as a shirt. It makes it so easy to throw on a pair of shorts and leave for the beach or slide on a skirt and a sweater and having dinner after a day in the water.

I remember a time when the one piece was very unsexy and unfun but now there are some beautiful and creative one piece bathing suits. These are my favorite “shirt” suits this season, just in time for Memorial day weekend.

Who I’m Driving To: Another Round

This week’s who I’m driving to goes to Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton, host(esses?) of the BuzzFeed podcast, Another Round.

Because I spend a great deal of time in the car, it gets lonely and I can’t always listen to music. But being in the car with Heben (pronounced like Heaven) and Tracy is like working and riding along with two of my best girl friends.

BuzzFeed's Another Round was named one of the top podcasts of 2015, and now its signature brand of shrewd hilarity is headed right to your inbox.

Each Tuesday, from the very top of their show, Heben and Tracy are funny, candid and just plain ole charming. With interviews including heavy hitters like Queen Latifah, Melissa Harris Perry and Hillary Rodham Clinton to lesser known yet still poignant characters like activists, Maryam Al-Khawaja, and computer coder whiz kid, Kaya Thomas, Heben and Tracy manage to strike the perfect blend between featuring the people you know and the people you didn’t know you wanted to know. With segments like Tracy’s Animal Corner and rapid fire segment, Pewm Pewm Pewn *insert finger guns here*, I find myself constantly laughing and clapping along.

Every week, hosts Tracy and Heben will send you some of their favorite articles, videos you can't miss, and more.

What’s more, the world of podcasting is dominated by white men and women and it’s refreshing to see (hear?) myself as a black woman be represented. Tracy and Heben are kind to each other, silly with their jokes and the way they present information is just down right smart. The positive way they interact with each other and the world at large is not often represented in the media and it’s a valuable point of view. So if you are a black girl and are looking to see more of yourself or if you just feel like you want to engage with two intelligent young women, run, leap, jump to ITunes or wherever you get your podcast and give them a try.

Consider this me buying a round for Heben and Tracy

Starter list:

Episode 45: Practical Tactical Brilliance (with Lin-Manuel Miranda)

Episode 33: Pick a Slay Uzo Aduba

Episode 17: Caribbean Vibez (with Stacey-Marie Ishmael)

Moby Pineapple Skirt

This weekend was the J. Crew Warehouse Sample Sale in Asheville, North Carolina. I have been to quite a few of these sales lately including Raleigh, Lynchburg and to the latest in Asheville. While I am a shopper, I am actually going to these sales with purpose. I have been searching high and low for this J. Crew Ratti Pineapple Skirt.

I am in love with this skirt and have been searching for it for years. It is the Moby Dick of my closet. I didn’t find it at this sale, however I came out with more stuff than I thought was humanly possible.

Disclaimer: my husband is a die hard shopper and has been building quite the sneaker collection so he definitely helped. His hull was even more deadly than mine. If you need a run down of prices, check out my first post from the Raleigh sale. I didn’t take my price sheet home with me from this one.

In total we came away with

3 Penfield Jackets

1 Dress

2 Skirts

5 Bags

10 Pairs of Sneakers

7 Pairs of Dress shoes

3 Pairs of Birkenstocks

2 Pairs of Illesteva Sunglasses

1 Statement Necklace

2 Ebbets Field Hats

For a grand total of $4,850 savings off of the retail price (give or take a dollar). So while I didn’t find my skirt this time, I am thrilled with our purchases.

There is still one day left of the sale (today, 5/22/16). If you are in the area, it’s totally worth it and Asheville is gorgeous this time of year! And if you are someone who is interested in future J. Crew Sample Sales definitely call the store in Lynchurg or Asheville and have them put you on their email blast. Happy Shopping!

P.S. If you have the skirt and are willing to part with it, I am totally willing to take it off your hands.

Kate Spade Downing Desk Alike

I am head over heels in love with the Kate Spade Downing desk but at a whopping $3,095, I wasn’t in love with the price.

I scoured the Internet and fell in love with this simple diy version of the desk from Mark Montano and needed to make it. I took a weekend and voila, in three hours it was complete.  We purchased the Alex desk from Ikea and the hardware from Home Depot online. In store had only rounded edge hardware instead of sharp edge hardware. It seemed to visually make all of the difference at least to me. If you’d like to create your own version of the desk, these are all the supplies you need.

I laid down the drop cloth and put the pre-built desk on it. After attaching the hardware, I simply dabbed the slightly imperfect spots with the daubers. I made sure to cut the edges of the daubers as instructed since Kate Spade’s circles are never perfect. I also painted the legs with a small brush. Unlike the linked diy project, I made sure to seal the desk with a few coats of high gloss top coat. The surface of the desk is so very slick that I am positive the spots would be gone in a week.

I’ve been using it as a very long nightstand since I often find myself bringing work. I am still settling on a chair. I have a chippedale chair currently but I’m highly considering a lucite or acrylic chair. No matter what chair I end up with, I couldn’t be happier with the results as I saved myself $2,900.

Who I’m Driving To: The Internet

For years, I played music at the beginning of the college classes I taught. Whenever I played “Get Away” at least one student would ask “What is this?” To which I would have to reply, “The Internet”. No I was not being snarky. The band, The Internet is an L.A. banded headed up by Syd Tha Kid, who lends her hip hop meets neo-soul vocals, and Matt Martians, who provides the keys. The band is from Odd Future the 20+ collective that may or may not have broken up and included the likes of Frank Ocean (where is he?), Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator to name a few. I have to say though that The Internet is hands down my favorite part of the collective.

Their music is interesting and cool and just all around feel good.  While vocalist Syd could use a little voice training, she has more charisma than all the people I’ve met in the last year. What’s more the adorable Ethiopian front woman is a vulnerable and real as she frequently opens up about her battles with depression, loneliness and her sexuality.

She makes the band interesting and they are totally worth listening to especially if you can find acoustic versions of their songs like their NPR Tiny desk concert. Ironically, it also gives the perfect starter lists of songs.

Starter list

  • “Get Away”
  • “Under Control”
  • “Dontcha”

Who I’m Driving To: Andra Day

I drive a lot. I mean a lot A LOT. I usually opt to listen to podcasts but at some point during the day, I give it a rest and listen to an artist’s entire body of work. Each Monday, I’ll feature an artist that I find myself loving so much that I cut off my beloved podcasts. This week “Who I’m Driving to” is Andra Day.

If you’ve never heard of Andra Day please shimmy out from under that rock you live under and give her a listen. If her voice is not one you recognize from intentionally looking for her music, you may recognize her from everything the holiday themed Apple commercial with Stevie Wonder that played nonstop on Hulu around Christmas. Or perhaps you’ve seen her cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself while you were binge watching Youtube videos at two a.m.

Whether you recognize her music or not, the time is now because Andra Day is worth a listen. With a look that is the love child of  Rihanna and Amy Winehouse, Andra Day is charming right from first glance. But then she opens her mouth and you are positively blown away. Her ballads are relatable and make you want to hug yourself. I was sold from the very first line of her song, Rise Up.

You’re broken down and tired Of living life on a merry-go-round And you can’t find the fighter But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out.

Starter songs:

Rise Up

Forever Mine

Lose Yourself

Polka Dots and Rainy Day Shots

We had a wedding to attend this weekend and I finally got to wear this adorable polka dot shirt dress from Talbots.

I’ve been eye balling a few things from Talbots lately as they have really been making an effort to design to a younger clientele. I knew the first moment I saw this dress that I had to have it and for 30% off this weekend for their friends and family sale paired with a teacher’s discount, I didn’t feel so bad pulling the trigger.

It runs pretty true to size but like any dress that I wear it gaps a bit at the chest. It’s also a bit sheer because of its light weight but not overly so. It could use a lining though. All of that can be overlooked however because pockets!

It makes for the perfect wedding guest dress for a more casual wedding. It’s also a great wear to work dress as the length is office appropriate and while it flares, it doesn’t flounce. If I’m being really honest though I’m mostly going to wear it with a white converses and a denim jacket.

Sigh. I’m in love. I almost want to buy another one in case something bad happens to this one down the road. I get clumsy with pens and such.
